I have been servicing Maytag products for years and this includes the Amana and Jenn Air Brands. Many things have changed over the years and the old Maytag appliances are not what they used to be. Back in the old days when Maytag was just Maytag they had a reputation that was par none and the pride was in every product. Then came the economy and Maytag got caught up in it and when the old owners died off or gave the control over to the Corporation it all changed. Money became the moving factor and they cut costs right and left including the reduction of quality control and the lack of fixes when a problem developed. Mr Lonely  made it look like Maytag was perfect when it wasn't and worked only for the sales division and not the service or warranty part of the company.

Then they started buying other brands and companies including Amana and Norge. They were both the start of the downfall of Maytag because they were cheap and did not hold up and got worse when they did try and fix them. When Whirlpool acquired Maytag they scrapped much of these other products and only kept the names. They put the reliable Whirlpool machines inside of the Maytag cabinets and solved most of their old problems. Some machines they just junked period.

One problem product still haunts us today is the bottom mount refrigerator and Whirlpool has made some significant changes and upgrades to them, however there are still some old ones after the old Maytag design out there and they give us a hard time. The problem is the leaks and contaminated systems that make them almost un-repairable, but we try. You have to give a hand to Whirlpool as they are trying to improve all their products including these bottom mount units.

Whirlpool has been going back and correcting so many problems they inherited from Maytag with recalls at no charge. It is the right thing to do, but there is a limit and they are doing the best they can.

Today you can rely on Whirlpool and it is the only brand I can recommend today other than Sub-Zero. This includes their whole line including Kitchen Aid, Jenn Air, Amana, Admiral, Maytag, and many others. Note: there are multi levels of available models and price lines and durability and features very accordingly. I recommend extended warranty directly from the manufacturer today because there is only one year warranty offered now on new products. After market warranties do not offer factory service or factory trained servicers including parts.
